NET2010 Conference
Tuesday 7 - Thursday 9 September 2010
Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK
Location and directions
Cambridge’s unique setting on the banks of the River Cam, the ‘backs’ and the magnificent architecture of the University buildings all combine to make Cambridge one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Britain. It is not too large and has all the amenities you would expect from a University City.
Cambridge is about 60 miles north of London, and is easily accessible by train from London (under an hour’s journey) and by air from Heathrow, Norwich or Stansted Airports.
This year the conference will be held at Fitzwilliam College, Storey's Way, Cambridge, CB3 0DG, UK. For details on getting to Fitzwilliam College please see their website:http://www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/about/location
Fitzwilliam started life in 1869 as a non-collegiate institution, to provide undergraduates unable to afford membership of a college with an opportunity to study at Cambridge. It organised teaching from a handsome house opposite the Fitzwilliam Museum. In the second half of the twentieth century Fitzwilliam House, as it was then called, became Fitzwilliam College, moved to its current site and received its royal charter in 1966.
The College was built in the grounds of The Grove, a splendid Regency house which is now part of the College. The first student buildings and the impressive Hall building were designed by Sir Denys Lasdun and completed in 1966; these were followed by New Court and Wilson Court, and the award-winning Chapel designed by Sir Richard MacCormac. Most recently awards have been won by Gatehouse Court and the Auditorium, designed by Allies and Morrison. The new Library & IT Centre, designed by Edward Cullinan Architects and opened in January 2010 completes the whole College site.
The welcoming main entrance is in Storey's Way, off Madingley Road. The beautiful gardens enclosed by student accommodation are one of Cambridge's best-kept secrets.
