Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of King Henry VI (the founder of King's Collge) was granted a charter to found the college in 1448. In 1465 Queen Elizabeth Woodville, wife of King Edward IV, became Patroness of the college. The college is situated on both sides of the river Cam and joined by the famous mathematical bridge which was originally designed and built in 1749. It has subsequently been rebuilt to the same design in 1866 and 1905.
